MDF is made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibers. These residuals can include sawdust, shavings, and chips that are left over from the production of other wood products. The wood fibers are then combined with wax and a resin binder under high temperature and pressure to form panels.

MDF's smooth surface is free of imperfections, making it ideal for applications where a smooth finish is essential, such as furniture making or interior design. Its uniform density throughout the panel makes it easy to work with, and it can be cut, drilled, and routed without the worry of variations in density that can occur with solid wood.

Chipboard, also known as particle board, is an engineered wood product made by compressing and bonding wood particles with resin and a special adhesive under high heat and pressure.

On the positive side, it is affordable, easy to work with, and can be made from a variety of wood sources. Additionally, particleboard is more uniform and consistent than natural wood, making it ideal for large-scale manufacturing. However, it is less durable than solid wood and can be prone to swelling and warping if exposed to moisture. Furthermore, particleboard is not as strong as other engineered wood products, such as plywood or oriented strand board (OSB). Despite these drawbacks, particleboard remains a popular choice for a wide range of applications, from furniture to construction materials.

Oriented strand board (OSB) is an engineered wood product made by compressing and bonding wood strands with resin and wax under high heat and pressure. Its main advantage is that it is more durable than particleboard, with a higher strength-to-weight ratio and better resistance to moisture. Additionally, OSB is less prone to warping and swelling, making it a popular choice for construction and roofing applications. However, OSB is more expensive than particleboard, and it can be more difficult to work with due to its density and hardness. Overall, the choice between OSB and particleboard will depend on the specific application and budget constraints.

Plywood is an engineered wood product made by layering thin sheets of wood veneer together with glue. Plywood can be used for a wide range of applications, including furniture, cabinetry, and construction materials. Its main advantage is its strength and stability, with superior resistance to warping and splitting compared to solid wood. However, plywood can be more expensive than other engineered wood products.
